1A Gold Star Charizard — the EX era's shiny treatment, marked by the gold star beside the name and printed at odds far tougher than any regular holo. It's also a Delta Species card, giving Charizard an altered typing and a look no other version has. Dragon Frontiers came late in the EX era with modest print runs, which is why clean copies climb so steeply.

4Skyridge closed the Wizards of the Coast era in 2003, when distribution was already winding down — far fewer packs were opened than for earlier sets, so its crisp e-Card-era holos are scarce out of proportion to their age. Charizard is the card the set is remembered for, and survivors in top grade are genuinely rare, which keeps it among the most valuable non-Base Charizards in existence.

5A Gold Star Mewtwo — the EX era's scarcest print treatment, with the gold star beside the name and Masakazu Fukuda's eerie violet artwork. Pairing the franchise's flagship Psychic with its rarest tier puts this near the top of every Mewtwo want list.

6Shining Pokémon were the TCG's first alternate-color 'shiny' cards — introduced with two cards in Neo Revelation, then expanded to eight secret rares in Neo Destiny, numbered past the end of the set. Shining Charizard was the one everyone wanted, gold-trimmed and off-palette, and clean copies were scarce from the start. High-grade examples still trade for thousands, second only to Base Set among vintage Charizards.

7Legendary Collection was 2002's 'greatest hits' set — classic cards reprinted alongside the game's first reverse-holo treatment — and its Charizard holo is one of the strongest takes on Arita's original artwork. It reads like Base Set Charizard with three more years of printing polish, and two decades on, high-grade copies are the hard part.

Frequently asked
What is the most valuable Pokémon card?
On this list, the priciest card is Charizard ★ δ from Dragon Frontiers at around $27,500 (TCGplayer market). One-of-a-kind promos, tournament prizes, and PSA 10 vintage cards can sell for far more, but among the cards we track with live prices, that is the current leader.
How are these prices determined?
Every price here is the TCGplayer market value — a rolling average of recent actual sales, not an asking price. We refresh the numbers weekly, and the "Prices as of" date above tells you when this snapshot was taken. Prices move constantly, so treat the ranking as a live snapshot rather than a fixed order.
What makes a Pokémon card valuable?
Four things do most of the work: scarcity (short print runs, secret rares, and error cards), age (vintage first editions from 1999–2002), condition (a PSA 10 can be worth many times a raw copy), and demand for the Pokémon or artwork. Popular chase Pokémon like Charizard and special illustration rares command a premium on all four counts.
